Wetlands

New Zealand’s unique wetlands are a habitat for some our most treasured plants and birdlife.

At the northern tip of our Fault Lake Vineyard, are the beautiful wetlands that gave name to one of our renowned vineyard sites. This wetland is home to many native, protected birds including the ‘Marsh Crake’ and is also home to rare native New Zealand flora.

Of particular note is a family of swans that return to nest every year in the wetlands, at which time we affectionately call the site Swan Lake. This site is recognised by the local government as a Significant Natural Site, given the sheer amount of

native bird species that inhabit the area.

A research thesis of New Zealand wetland areas found that our Fault Lake vineyard was home to more species of native bird than any other found in the Marlborough area.

Since we established the Fault Lake Vineyard we have ensured this area has flourished, by removing nocuous water clogging weed and encouraging native flora, fauna and animal life to thrive. Our vineyards are set well back from the area so not to disturb the

environment and its precious inhabitants.

Over the years the wetlands have become a more ‘pronounced’ feature as a natural habitat for some our most treasured natural plant and birdlife.
